About Acupuncture
For people who are unfamiliar with acupuncture, the core of this ancient form of medicine is centered on theory that Qi, or vital life energy, flows throughout the body in specific pathways called channels or meridians. Qi provides nourishment to every cell, organ, and muscle in the body and as such, it is responsible for allowing movement of the body as well as protecting it from illness, disease and pain. A person’s health is largely determined by the quantity and proper flow of their Qi. When the Qi is flowing properly, the result is good health. However, if there is a blockage or disturbance in the Qi, pain, illness, or disease may ensue. Qi can be disrupted from a lack of exercise, physical and emotional trauma, stress, overexertion, or poor diet.
Acupuncture aids the body in correcting these imbalances and restores the proper flow of qi so that good health may resume. During treatment, the acupuncturist will place very thin sterile needles at precise points along the channel pathways. Practitioners of acupuncture and TCM are specifically trained to detect and correct the balance and movement of Qi within the human body. Based on the patient’s unique symptoms, the acupuncturist will choose to concentrate on points related to specific organs.
The acupuncturist will develop a unique treatment plan tailored to the particular signs and symptoms of each individual. It is important to remember that acupuncture is not an “instant fix,” as the ultimate goal of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine is to resolve the root of the disorder as well as achieve symptomatic relief. By treating the body as a whole and concentrating on the unique aspects of each individual, the acupuncturist will support you on the road to recovery from your illness or disease to health and happiness!
